The Descent

A push-your-luck submarine expedition into the abyss. The deeper you go, the richer the haul. But the less likely you are to make it back.

1–12 players Push-your-luck ~20–45 min

What is The Descent?

The Descent drops your whole group into a shared submarine descending into an ancient underwater trench. You're after a lost city's treasure — gold, relics, and equipment scattered across each depth level. Every round, the sub goes deeper and the dangers grow stronger. Each player makes their own call: venture outside to scavenge, or stay aboard and stay safe.

It's a push-your-luck game where everyone acts independently and simultaneously. One round you might all be charging out into the dark. The next, two players are loading their escape pods while three others are still chasing one last relic. The tension comes from watching those individual decisions collide — and sometimes collapse together.

The Point of the Game

Escape the submarine alive and surface with the highest total treasure value. Your loot only counts if you make it out — if you're still aboard when the hull implodes, you lose everything you were carrying.

The catch: the hull is shared. As the sub takes damage from dangers along the way, everyone aboard feels it. One person's bad luck can shorten the dive for the whole group. The constant tension is between personal greed and knowing when enough is enough.

How It Works

  1. Prepare for the dive: Configure the expedition length and difficulty, then everyone boards. The sub begins its descent.
  2. Choose your action: Each round, decide whether to venture outside the sub — risky, but loot awaits — or remain aboard and stay protected from most dangers.
  3. Encounter dangers: As the sub descends, hazards appear. Some only affect those venturing outside. Others hit the hull regardless. Some deplete your personal HP. Know the difference.
  4. Scavenge loot: Outside, you may find treasure, equipment, and usable items. Treasure cashes out when you surface. Equipment passively helps you while you're outside. Usables can be activated at any time during the dive.
  5. Monitor the hull: The sub's hull takes collective damage as you go deeper. If it hits zero, the sub implodes. Everyone still aboard loses everything.
  6. Escape: When the risk feels too great, activate your escape pod and surface safely with your current loot. Time your exit — pods can still be damaged by the upcoming danger before they launch.

Good to Know

Shared Risk, Personal Gain

The submarine's hull damage affects everyone aboard. Your HP and your inventory are personal. Only you can decide when it's time to cut your losses and surface.

Push-Your-Luck Loop

There's no fixed end point. Each round you can choose to go one level deeper or escape. The longer you stay, the richer the rewards — and the higher the risk of losing it all.

Three Item Types

Trash & Treasure sells when you surface. Equipment gives passive effects while you venture outside. Usables can be activated at any time — health packs, hull patches, and more.

Escape Pods

Your ticket out. Activate one to surface safely with your current loot. Plan ahead — a pod can still be hit by the round's upcoming danger before it launches.

Depth Zones

The trench descends through zones: Sunlight, Twilight, Midnight, and Hadal. Each deeper zone brings stronger dangers, rarer loot, and greater hull stress. Know when you've gone far enough.

No Late Joining

All players must board before the dive begins. You can't join a session already in progress — once the sub descends, the crew is locked in.

The sub is waiting. How deep does your group go?
